Party Unity Breakfast of the Charleston County Republican Party

Our Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on October 15th, 2005 at the American Legion Hut, located at 1747 Ashley Hall Road. There will be breakfast at 8:30am, followed by the meeting at 9am; there will also be plenty of parking at the American Legion Hut. Please be sure to bring $5.00 for breakfast. Our speaker for this meeting will be Dr. Oscar Lovelace, who has announced his bid for the Republican nomination of Governor in the 2006 election. At our meeting Dr. Lovelace will discuss his campaign’s platform, and will answer questions on current issues.

MAP Commission Report

At the September meeting of the Charleston County Republican meeting, Dr. Mark Hartley presented a detailed report of the MAP Commission. The Charleston County Commission on Management, Accountability and Performance (MAP) was created by a unanimous vote by Charleston County Council in January 2004. Modeled after a similarly named state commission formed by Governor Mark Sanford in January 2003, the Charleston County MAP commission has been charged with studying county government, and recommending changes to improve effectiveness, efficiency, resource management, and responsiveness to the community.

The Commission presented its final report to Charleston County Council in August 2005; this report is available to the public, and a downloadable version is posted on the county website at www.charlestoncounty.org.

In addition to this link there is also a limited supply of printed copies available. If anyone is interested in obtaining a hard copy of this document, please contact Linda Slater at 958-4006. The report is free of charge.

2006 Dues

Attention members: our PUB dues for 2006 are now due. The club’s dues are $10.00 for the entire year, and are critical in the operation of the club. Please pay them as soon as possible in order that we can continue to expand our club.

 Future Meetings

Here is an itinerary for our future meetings:

November:

Mr. John Knott, who is the chairman of the Charleston County Transportation Advisory Board, will be the speaker for our November meeting. Mr. Knott will speak about the board, which is gathering public comments about how the new half cents sales tax revenue should be spent. The board will be presenting their findings and recommendations to a future Charleston County Council meeting

December:

Because of the Christmas holiday, there will not be a meeting.

January:

Mr. Hugh Weathers, the Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of South Carolina, will be the speaker at out January meeting. He will speak about the functions of his office, and his upcoming campaign to retain his position.
